Andrew Simon Shares His Favorite Things About the Philippines

Andrew Simon Shares His Favorite Things About the Philippines

Yet another soulful display of skill and exceptional talent, the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra’s Spotlight Series features Andrew Simon, principal clarinetist of the internationally acclaimed Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra this July 24 at the Meralco Theatre.

Although it’s his first time to perform with the group, Andrew has apparently been visiting the Philippines for the past 22 years, and is proud to say that he has visited more of the country than most Filipinos! A regular visitor, Andrew Simon notes that Palawan is the next destination on his list. He says that our natural surroundings and hospitable personality makes our country a very desirable destination.

When asked what his favorite Filipino dish was, he was quick to say halo-halo, and some variations in the classic Adobo recipe. Andrew, more than being excited about his performance, looks forward to exchanging cultures with the Filipinos as he hopes to give us an authentic performance, mentioning how he shares the same heritage with Aaron Copland, one of the composers included in the program.

The program includes Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, Weber’s Concertino in E-flat, Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie, Baerman’s Adagio for Clarinet and Orchestra, and a few more pieces prepared by the orchestra.

The second feature concert of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra this year, this coming performance fuels the momentum for the orchestra’s signature brand, “Spotlight Series”, a chain of concerts that feature masterpieces from world-renowned composers, performers and music masters.

Musicoveries

Musicoveries

Did you know research suggests that students who listen to classical music right before their test can score better on their math exams?

Music can also increase students’ confidence, improve language skills, and help them appreciate culture. There are indeed many reasons why being in touch with music is essential, especially for the youth.

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra is thus reaching out to the Filipino youth. The orchestra will produce a free concert for public school students from Grades 4-6 entitled “Musicoveries” to be held at the Aliw Theatre on February 11, 2014 at 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

Public schools and NGOs who are interested in sending their kids to this enriching and entertaining show, please contact Karlo Cea at karlo_cea-ctl@abs-cbn.com, or 0915-6246808, 415-2272 loc. 2409.

Five thousand students of public schools from Grades 4-6 are invited to enjoy the audio-visual performances that will both educate and amuse them while showing the inner workings of an orchestra and the relevance of orchestral music today. The program includes an introduction to the orchestral instruments, a demonstration of how music can make the same film scene produce different emotions, how a story can be told with only melodies, and much more. This exposure to the beauty of live symphonic music will be a most unforgettable experience as the students will also be graced by guest performers from the Kapamilya roster.
